NEWARK, N.J. - July 10th, 2000 - IDT Corporation (NASDAQ: IDTC) announced today that FREEWAY, the Company's new Calling Party Pays (CPP) pager, will now be available in two leading regional electronics outlets - Fry's Electronics, based in Northern California, and Nationwide Electronics, the second largest electronics retailer in the New York metropolitan area. IDT is a leading multinational carrier, telephone company and Internet service provider.
The FREEWAY pager, officially launched on June 28th, 2000, utilizes IDT's proprietary Calling Party Pays (CPP) platform, an unconventional billing system that charges the caller for the cost of a page, as opposed to billing the receiving party. This unique platform eliminates the need for the credit checks, monthly fees and cumbersome contracts typically associated with other paging services.
"Experts have been predicting the demise of paging for fifteen years," said Howard Jonas, IDT's Chairman and CEO, "but the excitement that FREEWAY is generating among retailers and consumers alike indicates just the opposite is true. The growing roster of top name retailers carrying FREEWAY in their stores, and the rate at which the pagers have been selling - more than 10,000 a month in pre-launch sales - shows that IDT has a winning product in a very vibrant market."
IDT's Wireless Division is also launching an aggressive telemarketing campaign to promote the FREEWAY pagers, which kicks off today in Baltimore, Cleveland and Indianapolis. The initiative is targeting both teenagers and their parents, and stresses the ease-of-use, convenience and safety factor of the new paging products, which include both numeric and text pagers.
"There is still a very untapped market for paging services in this country," said Jim Courter, President of IDT. "By offering users free lifetime airtime, with no contracts to sign, no credit checks, and no monthly fees or bills, FREEWAY is making paging accessible to everyone, including teenagers, cost conscious consumers, the credit-challenged, and the large Hispanic market that has been buying IDT prepaid calling cards for years."
Fry's Electronics and Nationwide Electronics join national retail chain Best Buy in offering customers IDT's FREEWAY pager. FREEWAY is also sold through the same extensive nationwide retail distribution network that sells IDT's prepaid calling card products. The FREEWAY numeric pager has a suggested retail price of $49.95, and the FREEWAY text messaging pager sells for about $79.95.
IDT's Wireless Division was launched in March of this year. On June 20th, 2000, the Company announced the introduction of its branded wireless program, which will offer prepaid wireless mobile phone service provided on the Sprint PCS? (NYSE: PCS) Nationwide wireless Network.
