NEWARK, N.J. - May 8, 2000 - IDT Corporation (NASDAQ: IDTC) today stressed its commitment to online privacy, in the wake of the successful launch of FreeAtLast.com, IDT's new communications service offering unlimited Internet access, emailing, fax service and Internet phone calls, completely free of charge. IDT is a leading multinational carrier, telephone company and Internet Service Provider.
By utilizing privately-held Predictive Networks' "intelligent" content delivery system, FreeAtLast.com delivers precision targeted advertising to users based on their own unique demographics and content affinities, while maintaining users' anonymity.
"IDT recognizes how critical the issue of privacy is to today's Internet users," said Howard Jonas, Chairman and CEO of IDT. "With FreeAtLast.com, consumers no longer have to worry about their privacy being compromised or their personal information being sold to third parties."
"We designed this system to be the solution to the online privacy dilemma. It requires user permission, user anonymity, and it records no clickstream data," added Devin Hosea, Founder of Predictive Networks. "With the Predictive model, advertising is less intrusive, less distracting, and more meaningful to users because it's targeted to their unique interests, resulting in a richer and more productive online experience."
IDT launched FreeAtLast.com on May 2nd, 2000. Subscriber signup rates have since been approaching one new customer per minute. What's more, click-through rates on advertising content are higher than the typical industry rate of less than 1%. As a result, advertisers are willing to pay as much as six times the usual online ad rates, translating into higher revenue streams.
"IDT is confident its free Internet model will succeed in the long term because the Predictive platform has such a high success rate in attracting user interest in the advertising it delivers," said Jim Courter, President of IDT. "This translates into much higher ad revenue, as well as more satisfied customers."
The launch of FreeAtLast.com comes at a time of increasing concern over privacy on the Internet. According to a recent report by Forrester Research, 80% of Internet users surveyed said they support a policy that prohibits the sale of data to third parties, and 50% said they'd be willing to contact the government to regulate online privacy.
